Description
"Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion; it is not the expression of personality, but an escape from personality. But, of course, only those who have personality and emotions know what it means to want to escape from these things."
T. S. Eliot's advocacy of impersonality as a literary ideal in Tradition and the Individual Talent had an immeasurable impact on Modernist literature and continues to resonate today. An incisive (and controversial) account of individual artists' relation to their forebears, this essay remains an outstanding work of critical prose.

A Passion in the Desert
"They ended as all great passions do-by a misunderstanding." A French soldier escapes captivity and stumbles into something stranger than war: solitude, survival, and a wild intimacy with a panther in the sands of Egypt. What begins in fear turns to ritual, fascination, and a bond as mysterious as it is fatal. Balzac's tale is swift, elemental, and aching with...Paperback$1499Unit price /UnavailableAvailableShips in 3-4 weeks -
Bullshit Jobs: A Work Rant
What if the modern economy is full of jobs that everyone secretly knows are meaningless-but no one is allowed to admit it? In this incendiary and darkly funny essay, anthropologist David Graeber takes a flamethrower to the world of pointless bureaucracy, soul-crushing middle management, and the quiet misery of workers paid to pretend. Bullshit Jobs is part polemic, part social...Paperback$1499Unit price /UnavailableAvailableShips in 3-4 weeks -
Review of Mein Kampf by Adolf Hitler
"He has grasped the falsity of the hedonistic attitude to life." Orwell read Hitler-and believed him. In this blistering review from 1940, he lays out what most of polite society refused to face: that Hitler's appeal wasn't madness, but meaning. Not policy, but myth. While the democracies offered comfort and reason, Hitler offered blood, struggle, and the poetry of power-and...Paperback$1499Unit price /UnavailableAvailableShips in 3-4 weeks -
The Discourse of Voluntary Servitude
"There are only four or five who maintain the dictator⦠not the six thousand but a hundred thousand, and even millions, cling to the tyrant by this cord to which they are tied." In Praise of Cosmetics
"Everything beautiful and noble is the result of reason and calculation." Nature, Baudelaire says, is ugly-and art is what saves us from it. This wicked, brilliant fragment defends makeup not as deception but as devotion: a ritual rebellion against decay, chance, and animal life. To paint the face is to reject nature's chaos and choose artifice-freely, proudly, and exquisitely.Paperback$1499Unit price /UnavailableAvailableShips in 3-4 weeks -
Tyranny of Style
"If it is art, it is not for all, and if it is for all, it is not art." In this sharp, uncompromising address, he defends the composer's duty to the text: not to entertain, not to soothe, but to translate meaning with precision and depth. Music, he argues, must obey something higher than taste-something as exacting, and as rare,...Paperback$1499Unit price /UnavailableAvailableShips in 3-4 weeks -
The Communist of Montmartre
In 1935 Paris, the French Communist Party faces a surreal dilemma: Moscow demands a black African delegate for its upcoming Festival of Peace, but none can be found-until a flamboyant vaudeville performer named Luciano di Lammermoor unexpectedly fits the part. Justice in Palestine
A religious act cannot be performed with the aid of the bayonet or the bomb. In 1938, Mahatma Gandhi wrote a bracing and, at times, discomfiting essay on the claims of justice and nationhood in Palestine. Profoundly informed by its author's sympathy for the plights of Jews and Arabs alike, this text is also uncompromising in its advocacy of the...Paperback$1499Unit price /UnavailableAvailableShips in 3-4 weeks -
On Being Ill
On Being Ill is introduced with the sentiment: "Always to have sympathy, always to be accompanied, always to be understood would be intolerable." Virginia Woolf's essay begins by lamenting the surprise neglect of ill-health as a potential literary subject. What then unfolds is a dazzlingly written series of reflections on sickness, fiction, and the chilling indifference of the natural world....Paperback$1499Unit price /UnavailableAvailableShips in 3-4 weeks -
The Fly
"Now one could imagine that the little front legs rubbed against each other lightly, joyfully. The horrible danger was over; it had escaped; it was ready for life again." Taking as its narrative occasion a brief meeting between two bereaved fathers, The...Paperback$1499Unit price /UnavailableAvailableShips in 3-4 weeks -
Whose Body?
With philosophical nerve and unforgettable thought experiments, Judith Jarvis Thomson's "A Defense of Abortion" transformed the moral debate on reproductive rights. First published in 1971, it became a cornerstone of modern moral philosophy, widely taught, fiercely debated, and endlessly cited. Few essays have so deeply shaped public discourse-or made abstract reasoning feel so urgently and disarmingly human.Paperback$4300Unit price /UnavailableAvailableShips in 2-3 weeks -
The Spirit of Monarchy
"All we want is to aggrandize our own vainglory at second hand; and the less of real superiority or excellence there is in the person we fix upon as our proxy in this dramatic exhibition, the more easily can we change places with him, and fancy ourselves as good as he."
