The original leather and gold cover that inspired our Carmine journal was likely meant to become a part of French clergyman Michel de Marolles' famed collection of engravings and prints. However, de Marolles died before this binding of L'Office de la Semaine Sainte was completed. Original Art: L'office de la Semaine Sainte book binding. Era: 1688. Region: Paris, France.

This red and gold Paperblanks Equinoxe Carmine journal reproduces a 1688 binding protecting L'office de la Semaine Sainte. The original binding was adorned à la fanfare, a hand-tooled pattern edged in gilt. Fanfare, which was a style popular in the seventeenth century, required tremendous skill on the part of the bookbinder and was reserved for books of great importance.
