Resurrection Men introduces us to a new phase in Detective Inspector Rebus's career—he's off the case, literally. A few days into the murder inquiry of an Edinburgh art dealer, Rebus loses his temper with a colleague and is subsequently sent to the Scottish Police College for 'retraining'. In other words, he's in the Last Chance Saloon.

While at the college, Rebus is assigned to an old, unsolved case. However, there are individuals within his team who harbour their own secrets, and they are determined to protect them at any cost.

Moreover, Rebus finds himself acting as a go-between for notorious gangster 'Big Ger' Cafferty. Meanwhile, newly promoted Detective Sergeant Siobhan Clarke is working on the murder case of the art dealer.
