Description
Generally, it is believed that Chinese New Year pictures originated from the Gate-God picture of the Han dynasty, and the term "New Year picture" occurred during the Qing dynasty. At the beginning, New Year pictures were only used to convey blessing. As time went by, this form of art has extended to reflect social and daily life of the new China after establishment in 1949.
The New China presents carefully-selected New Year pictures created from the 1950s to 1990s, and categorises them into the following chapters: portraits, celebration events, military affairs and national defence, international affairs, folk life, traditional festivals, national unity, and cultural education.
