Generally, it is believed that Chinese New Year pictures originated from the Gate-God picture of the Han dynasty, and the term "New Year picture" occurred during the Qing dynasty. At the beginning, New Year pictures were only used to convey blessing. As time went by, this form of art has extended to reflect social and daily life of the new China after establishment in 1949.
