Voyagers

A journey through history and across the planet, Voyagers shows how exploration has led humanity to the brink of destruction—and how it might help us face the challenges of the future

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

From the award-winning science writer Lauren Fuge comes Voyagers, an expansive narrative that weaves together personal journey, historical recount, and urgent environmental commentary. This compelling book takes you from the rugged fjords of the Pacific Northwest to the ancient geology of Australia's outback, and even to the far reaches of the cosmos. Fuge delves deep into humankind's intrinsic desire to explore, examining how this relentless curiosity has both driven progress and brought us to the precipice of ecological disaster.

In Voyagers, Fuge explores the dual-edged nature of human exploration. On one side, our wanderings have uncovered new lands, resources, food, and boundless knowledge. However, these same quests have often pushed Earth's systems to a breaking point. Today, we continue to fish ever-deeper seas, drill for oil in ever-more inaccessible locations, and fell forests that have stood for millennia. Fuge asks one crucial question: can we learn from our history of exploration to reimagine a sustainable future?

Beyond a mere recount of historical voyages, Voyagers is also a deeply personal narrative, elaborating on Fuge's own experiences and reflections. Her journey becomes a hymn to the Earth—a call to action for readers to reconsider the ways in which we interact with our planet. By grounding her narrative in both personal anecdotes and scientific rigor, Fuge creates an electrifying adventure that challenges and inspires.

'A beautiful, important book, charged with the questing rigour of science and the poetic hauntings of a restless spirit.' - KIM MAHOOD

'Moving effortlessly from the immensity of planetary time to profoundly human questions about love and hope, Voyagers is a remarkable achievement.' - JAMES BRADLEY

Praised for its literary sensibility and scientific depth, Voyagers is not just a travelogue but an activist's manifesto. Fuge's evocative writing urges us to pause and reconsider our modern forms of exploration and consumption. The stakes are high, and the questions posed by this book are urgent.

'Fuge is an accomplished science writer with a literary sensibility, both of which she demonstrates in this intriguing book...This is no airy-fairy travelogue, but an activist's call for us to stop and reconsider how we travel now.' - GUARDIAN

'Brilliant. This book holds questions that must be addressed as matters of physical urgency. Please read it. And please take up fighting for those questions as you can.' - ASHLEY HAY

'Voyagers is a journey worth taking for readers interested in humanity's interaction with nature, a history of exploration, or a memoir of one woman's quest to embrace her own restlessness.' - ANTONY MORRIS, BOOKS AND PUBLISHING

Embark on this thought-provoking voyage with Lauren Fuge and discover what it truly means to explore without compromising the fragile beauty of our world.
