The original Shorin Ryu forms are shown as learned from the U.S. Chief Instructor, Jerry Gould, since 1970. The Soobahkdo/Tangsoodo versions relate more closely to the modern forms as learned through research with many instructors in both Asia and America. The ITF forms of General Choi have been learned since 1972 from Charles Kheriaty.
The Palgwe and Taeguek forms were acquired from Kukkiwon masters: Ji Dong Ju on Guam, Yun Hak Tok in Seattle, Dr. Kwon in Chicago, and Jo Jae Oh from the Kukkiwon.
Nicholls has earned ninth dan certificates from the Jidokwan, the U.S. National Taekwondo Federation, and the World Taekwondo Council. He has advanced black belt degrees in several other martial arts.
