Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

In Breathing Under Water, esteemed author and theologian Richard Rohr delves deep into the human condition, examining the various forms of addiction that entangle our lives. Through a compassionate and insightful narrative, Rohr reveals how the core principles of the Twelve Steps, rooted in Christian teaching, can serve as a beacon of hope and transformation for anyone struggling with addiction. Whether the dependence is overt, such as on alcohol or drugs, or a more subtle, pervasive entanglement with sin, Rohr's guidance offers a pathway to freedom and healing.

Rohr’s mastery lies in his ability to draw parallels between the Twelve Steps and the teachings of the Gospels, illustrating how these spiritual exercises can help us confront our brokenness and surrender to a higher power. He compellingly articulates that to survive the overwhelming waves of compulsive behaviour and addiction, we must learn "to breathe under water"β€”a transformative act of embracing divine love and compassion.

Recognised as one of the most pivotal thinkers in modern spirituality, Richard Rohr explains that the Twelve Steps are not merely a recovery tool for those addicted to substances, but a profound spiritual journey applicable to all. Drawing from his own experiences and deep knowledge of Christian mysticism, Rohr invites readers to a place of introspection, where they can question and redefine their relationships with God, themselves, and others.

'A must-read for any person who recognises the need to go "inward" on their soul’s journey to question what their relationship is with God, themselves, and others.'
The Cord

'Rohr is a perfect writer on the subject of the 12 Steps. His easy-to-read book is essentially a commentary on each of the steps, with twelve chapters and a postscript that concisely tackles the big religious questions of human suffering, suffering with which addicts and their families are intimately acquainted. Jesus, Rohr answers, is no stranger to suffering . . . This is a good book for those in recovery from addiction and those who love them.'
Publishers Weekly

'Richard Rohr continues to guide us to greater wholeness . . . his books have helped countless souls, especially those who struggle with issues of brokenness and seek transformation.'
National Catholic Reporter

Breathing Under Water is more than just a guide for those in recovery; it is a spiritual manifesto for understanding the universal human experiences of suffering, healing, and redemption. With clarity and empathy, Richard Rohr offers readers the keys to unlocking a life of spiritual depth and liberation from the chains of addiction. This book is a must-have for anyone looking to embark on a journey of spiritual renewal and self-discovery.
