Struggle Without End
Struggle Without End
A revised edition of the best-selling book containing two new chapters covering the last decade and a half. Struggle Without End by Dr. Ranginui Walker is a compelling history of Aotearoa, New Zealand, viewed from a distinctly Māori perspective. Dr. Walker meticulously traces the journey of the Māori people from their Polynesian origins, through the arrival of European settlers in the mid-nineteenth century, to the present day. This captivating narrative delves into the continuous fight for justice, equality, and self-determination that Māori have undertaken over the centuries.
One of the central themes of Struggle Without End is the enduring resistance of the Māori people against colonial oppression and their ongoing efforts to reclaim their rights and sovereignty. Dr. Walker presents an unfiltered view of New Zealand's history, shedding light on the struggles and achievements of the Māori in the face of persistent challenges. The book eloquently captures the spirit of resilience and determination that characterises the Māori experience.
In this updated edition, Dr. Walker incorporates two new chapters that examine significant developments from 1990 onwards. These chapters highlight the resurgence and flourishing of Māori culture, as well as the growth of Māori political and economic influence. The author provides a thoughtful analysis of recent pivotal events, including the controversies surrounding the Foreshore and Seabed legislation, the impactful hikoi (protest marches), and Don Brash's divisive Orewa speech.
Dr. Walker's scholarly yet accessible writing ensures that Struggle Without End is not just a historical account but also a comprehensive exploration of the socio-political dynamics that continue to shape New Zealand today. His expert insights and deep cultural understanding make this book an invaluable resource for anyone interested in Māori history and the broader narrative of Aotearoa, New Zealand.
Whether you are a student, historian, or simply someone intrigued by New Zealand's rich cultural tapestry, Struggle Without End offers an essential perspective that enriches the understanding of this Pacific nation’s past, present, and future.
