The Insomniac's Guide to Love begins with a chance nocturnal meeting, where two insomniacs strike up a friendship. This connection forces them to confront the problems they're avoiding, not only to help them sleep but ultimately to allow them the capacity to love each other.
Bec spends her days supporting her boyfriend Matt through his incurable illness. Despite his condition, Matt is determined to live life to the fullest, ticking off bucket list items and creating memories while he can. Bec stands by his side, providing support and maintaining a brave face. Yet, by night, her reality shifts.
Elliot has struggled with sleep since his promising football career ended abruptly. After his marriage, which he hoped would be a new direction in life, falls apart, he finds himself grappling with his circumstances. During a nighttime run, he delivers a parcel to a neighbour's flat, where he encounters Bec, whom he mistakenly assumes is the recipient, Molly. Bec doesn't correct him. The next time she sees him running, she asks to join him, and they establish a nightly routine and friendship.
Soon, they replace running with visits to all-night cafes and conversations that stretch into the wee hours. As Bec begins to reassess her relationship with Matt and faces the looming reality of his mortality, she finds comfort in Elliot. He, in turn, starts to open up to her. However, the longer this continues, the more Bec feels as though she's deceiving everyone. Eventually, she must confront the reality of her life and identify what she truly needs to move forward and find her own happiness.
