August Wilhelm Rehberg (1757-1836) is primarily depicted as a conservative politician, although he made significant contributions to the metaphysical, moral-philosophical, and literary discussions of his time. In Enlightenment studies, he has mostly been forgotten. He is mainly known for his critical reviews of Kant's Kritik der praktischen Vernunft and Gemeinspruch, as well as his conservative view on the French Revolution.
However, the value of Rehberg’s thinking is by no means limited to his engagement with Kant’s work or his emergence as one of the founders of German conservatism. His diverse intellectual activity encompasses numerous aspects of philosophical, mathematical, political, literary-critical, and historical nature.
This volume focuses on Rehberg as a philosopher and publicist, aiming to overcome the narrow and fragmentary image of him as merely a conservative politician.
