Theresa joined our team this week and quickly dominated the lunch table with her scrabble skills, taking on Hannah and Amy in a couple of rounds of Bananagrams. It was amazing for the rest of us watching to see how quick those three powerhouses could come up with words! As the adrenaline settled, we discovered that Theresa's love of word games was just the beginning.
Alongside being a seasoned Scrabble player, she's also an avid jigsaw puzzler who has competed in speed puzzling events. I couldn't resist sitting down with her to learn how she got into the hobby and what she loves most about it.

How Did You Get into Puzzling?
Growing up, I spent a lot of time with my grandmother doing jigsaw puzzles and word puzzles together, so they've always been something I associate with happy memories. As an adult, I rediscovered how relaxing jigsaw puzzles can be. There's nothing better than putting on a good TV show and working your way through a puzzle.
What Drew You to Speed Puzzling?
Recently I accidentally signed up for a puzzling event, not realising how seriously so many people took it in New Zealand! On the day, I was woefully unprepared but had so much fun!
What is Speed Puzzling About?
Having a great time trying to assemble a puzzle as fast as possible. Of course, there's a competitive side to it, but what surprised me most was how friendly and supportive the community is.
Everyone encourages each other, shares tips and celebrates everyone's achievements, whether you're there to win or just have a good time.
Do You Have Any Techniques You Like to Use For The Competition?
Definitely flipping all the pieces over at the start, then starting on the border and sorting colours and textures. I also like to group pieces together with where they might go together and work on sections at a time.
What are Your Favourite Puzzles?
I love puzzles that are colourful, florals or anything with cute animals.
Do you Train for Your Speed Puzzling Competitions?
I usually try to complete a few puzzles before an event but if I'm honest, I mostly just wing it! Every competition I tell myself I'll be much better prepared for the next one... and then somehow I end up doing exactly the same thing.
What are Your Favourite Puzzle Brands to Do?
Ravensburger has always been a favourite and I also really love eeBoo and their designs.

If you enjoy puzzles at all, I'd definitely recommend giving a speed puzzling event a go. You don't have to jump straight into the solo competition either. The pairs and team events are a really fun, social way to get involved, and everyone is incredibly welcoming.
They also have a puzzle swap where you can exchange puzzles you've finished with other people, which is such a great idea. It's a really enjoyable day, whether you're there to compete or simply meet other puzzle lovers.
