The Daicos Story is about a migrant family doing well. Peter Daicos’s parents left Macedonia for Australia in the 1950s and built a new life in Melbourne. Peter's parents worked hard in their adopted country, but Saturdays were a time Peter and his dad spent together, going to watch South Melbourne play football. Peter Daicos’s hugely successful football career followed. He played his first game for Collingwood in 1979 and retired in 1993.

Peter is still considered one of the Collingwood Football Club’s greatest ever players: kicking 549 goals and playing 250 games in his 15-year career at the club. He earned a host of awards including: Goal of the Year in 1991, 2 x Collingwood Best and Fairest, 3 x VFL/AFL Team of the Year, a Hall of Fame recipient, Collingwood Team of the Century selection, and 5 x Collingwood top scoring goals.

Peter's two sons have followed in their father's footsteps and joined Collingwood, with Josh drafted in 2016 and Nick joining the club under the Father/Son rule in 2021. Both sons were in the Premiership team of 2023 and are considered stars at the Collingwood football club.

In The Daicos Story, Peter explores his migrant heritage, his football career, and his two sons' enjoyment of the game, just as he had.

A truly great story of a sporting family that has created its own traditions and a legacy through the generations.

About the Author

Peter Daicos's migrant parents were from the village of Vevi in the Greek region of Macedonia. Peter grew up in the inner city suburbs of Melbourne, where most of the migrant families lived. They were surrounded by Italians, Greeks and also Macedonian families. Peter's father followed AFL football and took Peter to the South Melbourne football club games when Peter was a boy. It was that enthusiasm for the game that set Peter on a path to becoming a talented junior footballer.

Peter's love of football led to a career playing for the Collingwood Football Club where he became one of their greatest ever players: kicking 549 goals and playing 250 games in his 15 year career at the club. He has a host of awards including: Goal of the Year in 1991, 2 x Collingwood Best and Fairest, 3 x VFL/AFL Team of the Year, a Hall of Fame recipient, Collingwood Team of the Century selection, 5 x Collingwood top scoring goal scorer.

After retiring from playing, Peter continued to be involved in football through coaching and marketing. Peter and his wife have two sons and a daughter. Both sons started playing football as youngsters and both now play for Collingwood and are recognised nationally for their immense talent.
