In Meditations, Marcus Aurelius - the Roman emperor renowned for his intellect and stoic philosophy - shares his profound inner thoughts, reflections, and wisdom. This collection of personal writings provides readers with a rare glimpse into the mind of a ruler whose musings on life, duty, and virtue were not originally intended for public consumption. Instead, these writings served as a form of self-improvement and contemplation for Aurelius himself, as he sought to navigate the challenges of leadership and existence.

Composed during his military campaigns and periods of solitude, Meditations captures the essence of Stoic philosophy, showcasing the delicate balance between public responsibility and personal introspection. Aurelius' words transcend time, delivering powerful messages on ethical living, personal growth, and the pursuit of inner peace. His succinct and pragmatic aphorisms provide readers with guidance on how to maintain composure amid chaos, fulfil their societal roles with integrity, and cultivate a harmonious relationship with the world and themselves.

This particular edition of Meditations is part of the Pocket Hardbacks series, a non-fiction collection that melds the collectability of Clothbound Classics with the accessibility of Great Ideas. With its elegant design and timeless wisdom, this volume is both a valuable collector's item and a practical guide to living well, making it an essential addition to any personal library.

Today, Marcus Aurelius’ meditations continue to resonate with readers across the globe, offering solace, inspiration, and a path to deeper self-awareness. His eloquence, humility, and sage advice remain relevant, shedding light on the enduring human condition and reminding us of the power of thoughtful reflection and steadfast resolve.

About the Author

Marcus Aelius Aurelius Antoninus, 121-180. was adopted by the emperor Antoninus Pius and succeeded him in 161 (as joint emperor with adoptive brother Lucius Verus). He ruled alone from 169. He spent much of his reign in putting down variou rebellions, and was a persecutor of Christians. His fame rest, above all, on his Meditations, a series of reflections, strongly influenced by Epictetus, which represent a Stoic outlook on life. He died in 180 and was succeed by his natural son, thus ending the period of the adoptive emperors. Diskin Clay is Professor of Classical Studies at Duke University and has published widely in the area of Ancient Greek Philosophy. Martin Hammond is Head Master of Tonbridge School and has translated Homer's Iliad for Penguin Classics.
