The Lighthouse by P. D. James is set on Combe Island, off the Cornish coast, a location known for offering a peaceful and secure respite to over-stressed professionals who holiday there.

The tranquillity is shattered when one of the distinguished visitors is discovered hanging in the island's lighthouse. It soon becomes apparent to the islanders that this is not a case of suicide, but murder.

Detective Adam Dalgliesh arrives to investigate, but before long, a second murder is uncovered. The entire investigation is jeopardised by a new, insidious danger on the island, one as potentially fatal as the murders themselves.
