When you gaze up at the stars in the night sky, it can be easy to think of them as twinkling lights set against a vast, inky backdrop. But have you ever wondered about the stories behind those lights? Can you identify the brightest stars and planets, or recognise the constellations that are visible at different times of the year? New Zealand's Night Sky: Prominent Stars and Constellations by Stardome Observatory Planetarium is your ultimate guide to understanding the southern hemisphere's night sky in all its glory.

This comprehensive guide expertly navigates the celestial wonders visible from New Zealand. Whether you're an amateur astronomer, a curious stargazer, or just someone who enjoys the beauty of the night sky, this book has something to offer. It features two meticulously crafted star maps that glow in the dark, making it easy to take your stargazing experience outdoors and compare your observations without needing additional light sources.

These glowing star maps are accompanied by a detailed list of constellations, each with high-quality images and informative descriptions. You'll learn about the myths and legends that ancient cultures attached to these celestial patterns, deepening your appreciation for the rich tapestry of stories that the night sky has inspired throughout human history.

New Zealand's Night Sky also covers the seasonal changes in the night sky, helping you understand which stars and constellations are visible at different times of the year. With this knowledge, you can plan your stargazing adventures to maximise your viewing opportunities. The book's accessible language and clear explanations make complex astronomical concepts easy to grasp for readers of all ages.

Whether you're lying on a blanket under the stars, setting up a telescope in your backyard, or teaching the next generation about the wonders outside our planet, New Zealand's Night Sky is an invaluable resource. Immerse yourself in the beauty and mysteries of the cosmos with guidance from the experts at Stardome Observatory Planetarium.

About the Author

Opening as an Observatory in March 1967, Stardome is considered one of the Auckland region's most popular and best loved attractions. Building its own Planetarium in 1997, it is the largest and most advanced planetarium in New Zealand, and one of few in the world co-located with a publicly accessible observatory. Stardome's mission is to inspire, challenge and educate about astronomy and space sciences. Stardome offers its visitors a unique experience combining learning with entertainment. David Britten is an Astronomy Educator at Stardome. He is regularly called on by the media to comment on celestial events, drawing on many years of experience explaining astronomical concepts in ways easily understood by the public.
