Natasha Lester creates an incredibly rich, immersive world. I genuinely felt like I was wandering the halls of the Chateau Marmont alongside Aria, watching the golden age of Hollywood shimmer on the surface while something much darker simmered underneath. The dual timelines are beautifully woven together, blending past and present in a way that feels seamless and cinematic.

This book does explore some heavier themes, particularly around the expectations placed on women in the 1950s, the silencing of their voices, and the quiet injustices that were often brushed aside in favour of reputation and power. It’s confronting at times but handled with such care and intention. And if I’m honest, while these themes are rooted in the past, there’s an unsettling thread that feels far too relevant even today.

There are subtle undertones that nod to Jane Eyre, the quiet resilience of a young orphaned girl, the gothic atmosphere, the search for identity and belonging, which adds another layer of depth. Aria’s strength isn’t loud or dramatic; it’s steady, observant, and deeply human.

As Natasha says at the end of her book, “Perhaps a fairytale ending where one woman changes a system that is emblematic of the world we live in is ridiculous. But writing this book made me remember each and every day to hope. And that's not nothing.”
