Sparks Like Stars
Sparks Like Stars by Nadia Hashimi is a spellbinding novel that takes readers on a journey through time and across continents, unravelling a poignant tale of survival, identity, and the unyielding quest for truth. Hashimi, the acclaimed author of The Pearl That Broke Its Shell, The House Without Windows, and When the Moon Is Low, weaves a rich, evocative narrative that delves deep into the heart of Afghanistan's turbulent history and the resilient spirit of its people.
"Suspenseful... emotionally compelling. I found myself eagerly following in a way I hadn’t remembered for a long time, impatient for the next twist and turn of the story." — NPR
Set against the backdrop of Kabul in 1978, the story centres around young Sitara Zamani, the daughter of a prominent family thriving in Afghanistan’s cosmopolitan capital. It is a time of hope and prosperity, under the visionary leadership of President Sardar Daoud and guided by the wisdom of Sitara’s father, his trusted advisor. However, their world is abruptly turned upside down when a communist coup d'état leads to the assassination of the president and the brutal extermination of Sitara’s entire family. The once secure and vibrant life crumbles into chaos as ten-year-old Sitara escapes the carnage, saved by a palace guard named Shair.
Through Shair’s bravery, Sitara is smuggled to safety and finds refuge with an American diplomat. This guardian not only shelters her but also provides the opportunity for a new life in America. Assuming the new identity of Aryana Shepherd, Sitara grows into a driven, accomplished surgeon who buries her traumatic past and directs her energies towards forging ahead in her adopted country. For three decades, she remains detached from her Afghan roots, until a pivotal encounter forces her to confront the ghosts of her past.
In New York, 2008, Aryana's life takes an unexpected turn when Shair, the very guard who saved her, appears in her examination room as an elderly patient. His presence resurrects a tidal wave of suppressed memories and unresolved questions about that fateful night and the fate of her family. With emotions ranging from anger to a burning need for closure, Aryana embarks on a courageous quest back to Kabul. In a city now marred by conflict and political strife, she is determined to uncover the truth about her family’s demise and the role Shair played.
Sparks Like Stars is a powerful narrative that captures the essence of home, not merely as a place, but as a mosaic of memories and identities. It explores themes of loss and resilience, reinvention and remembrance, illuminating the complexities of navigating between two worlds. Hashimi's poignant storytelling is bold and heart-wrenching, yet brims with hope, making Sparks Like Stars a truly unforgettable read.
Through the lens of personal tragedy and triumph, Nadia Hashimi offers a compelling glimpse into Afghan history while celebrating the enduring human spirit. This novel is a testament to the power of stories in bridging cultural divides and shedding light on experiences that shape our world.
