AN ECONOMIST BOOK OF THE YEAR

Rise and Kill First is an exceptional work by Ronen Bergman that delves deeply into the shadowy world of Israel's state-sanctioned assassination programmes. From the country's inception in 1948, Israel has adopted a policy of targeted assassinations to protect its citizens and secure its borders. This instinct of self-preservation has seen a wide array of missions, ranging from operations against high-profile enemies to pre-emptive strikes aimed at neutralising perceived threats.

This riveting account provides a comprehensive chronicle of these covert actions, shedding light on the successes and failures, and the complex moral and political consequences that accompany such operations. As readers journey through the pages, they are presented with unparalleled access to intelligence officers, policymakers, and the operatives who have carried out these missions. Bergman's meticulous research and gripping prose make it clear how these silent wars have shaped not just the Israeli nation but reverberated throughout the Middle East and the world at large.

Described as a "gripping investigation of Israel's assassination policy" by the Sunday Times, the book has received critical acclaim for its thoroughness and engaging narrative. The Observer termed it "remarkable," while the Daily Mail found it "riveting." Even noted author John le Carré called it "compelling."

Shortlisted for the Airey Neave Memorial Book Prize

Dominic Sandbrook of the Sunday Times praises the book as "exciting, sometimes moving, and always considered ... a stunning feat of research and a riveting read." With its blend of historical intrigue and detailed analysis, Rise and Kill First stands as an essential read for anyone interested in the complexities of modern-day espionage, the ethical boundaries of national defence, and the clandestine operations that continue to influence global politics.

Through Bergman's masterful storytelling, readers gain an unprecedented look into the secretive world of Israeli intelligence and the difficult decisions that come with safeguarding a nation. Whether you are a history enthusiast, a political junkie, or someone fascinated by international affairs, this book offers a profound and thought-provoking experience.
