Ghost Talkers by Mary Robinette Kowal introduces us to Ginger Stuyvesant, an American heiress living in London during World War I. Ginger is engaged to Captain Benjamin Harford, an intelligence officer. She serves as a medium for the Spirit Corps, a unique Spiritualist force. Each soldier heading for the front is conditioned to report to the mediums of the Spirit Corps upon death so they can swiftly relay information about troop movements to military intelligence.

While Ben is away at the front, Ginger uncovers the presence of a traitor. Without her fiancรฉ's presence to substantiate her findings, the higher authorities dismiss her concerns as mere imagination. Worse still, it becomes evident that the Spirit Corps is being directly targeted by the German war effort. Left to her own devices, Ginger must unravel how the Germans are targeting the Spirit Corps and prevent them. This task is particularly arduous and perilous for a woman of that era, but for her, both the spirit and the flesh are willing.
