Hold Tight Gently is a meticulously researched and evocatively told memoir by historian Martin Duberman. The book serves as a poignant memorial to those lost to AIDS, focusing on two unsung heroes of the epidemic’s early years: composer Michael Callen and poet Essex Hemphill. Callen emerged as a prominent activist striving to raise AIDS awareness amid widespread neglect, while Hemphill gave voice to the black gay and lesbian community in Washington, D.C., through powerful, introspective poetry.
