Since 9/11, there has been a substantial increase in the state's special powers, ostensibly for security purposes. These include indefinite detention, the assassination of suspected terrorists, the use of extraordinary rendition, torture, and alterations to due process. However, such powers are frequently obscure, seldom rescinded, and can sometimes result in counterproductive outcomes.
The book delves into the costs associated with counterterrorism and investigates how these costs might be mitigated. With a global perspective, it examines not only Western liberal democracies but also various examples from around the world.
