Arthur McKee, born to a poor Irish family, who moved to Liverpool after the Irish potato famine of the late 1840s. His mother was illiterate, signing the death certificates of 4 of her 9 children with a “X”. His father was a shoemaker/journeyman.
Join Arthur McKee as he escapes the grim poverty that he writes about, taking his sick brother on a journey to the other side of the world. In Wellington, New Zealand he hopes to find a “genial climate” to cure his brother’s tuberculosis.
A fascinating story, told by his granddaughter Jan Studholme, of his struggles and successes, brought to life vividly by his published articles, by letters of three sons from the battlefields of World War I, and by Jan’s description of the historical context of Arthur’s career which spanned over six decades and five different occupations.
