American Ulysses by Ronald C. White offers a profound examination of Ulysses S. Grant, a man whose legacy as a Civil War general and American president has often been misunderstood and undervalued. White meticulously unravels Grant's intricate life story, starting from his early struggles, through his rise as one of America's greatest military leaders, to his presidency marked by efforts to protect the rights of newly freed African Americans post-Civil War. The biography delves deeply into Grant's personal and professional evolution, drawing from seven years of in-depth research with primary documents, some previously overlooked by historians.

A New York Times Bestseller, American Ulysses, is more than just a recounting of military tactics and presidential policies. By highlighting Grant's generosities, curiosities, and introspection, White paints a comprehensive picture of a man who exemplified quiet resolve and effective leadership. Grant's ability to manage the egos of his officers with his delegating skills and his steadfast commitment to equal rights demonstrates his nuanced character. His relationship with his wife, Julia Dent Grant, is brought to life, portraying her as a spirited and influential partner who played a crucial role in his life.

Grant's presidency is notable for his moral stance against the Ku Klux Klan and his policies towards American Indians, showcasing his forward-thinking and compassionate governance. Beyond his political and military achievements, Grant’s personal courage is exemplified in his race against mortality to complete his Personal Memoirs, published by Mark Twain, which is now celebrated as one of the greatest American autobiographies.

Ronald C. White's biography reshapes our understanding of Ulysses S. Grant, casting him as an American hero whose contributions were fundamental in shaping the nation. American Ulysses moves beyond stereotypes and myth to reveal the complexities of a leader who was a devoted husband, father, and statesman. This work stands as the definitive biography of Grant, merging scholarly research with vivid narrative to capture the essence of an extraordinary figure in American history.
