Wigs, Hair and Make-Up is written by the former Deputy Head of Make-Up and Wigs at the National Theatre. This book provides a rare glimpse into a process that very few people experience. Drawing upon some of the most adventurous and challenging productions mounted at the National Theatre and elsewhere, the book reveals the intricacies of designing and fitting wigs, managing lightning-fast quick changes, and the integral role hair, wigs, and make-up artists play in any theatrical production. Despite their critical contribution to defining and executing a production’s aesthetic, their roles are much less discussed than those of writers, directors, and actors.

The involvement of hair, wigs, and make-up professionals requires extensive research and creative thinking, collaboration with other members of the creative team, specific knowledge of wig-making and measuring, make-up design and application, and managing all of these elements throughout the performance. Often responsible for all three areas (and sometimes more), the designer overseeing hair, wigs, and make-up brings multiple areas of expertise to the production, making them an essential part of the creative team.
