Slinky Malinki, Early Bird
Slinky Malinki, Early Bird
Slinky Malinki, Early Bird by Lynley Dodd is a charming and delightfully illustrated tale about a mischievous black cat who loves the early morning hours. As dawn breaks, Slinky Malinki springs into action, eager to start the day. Full of energy and curiosity, he believes his human family should share his enthusiasm for the wee hours of the morning.
From batting at curtains to pouncing on unsuspecting toes, Slinky Malinki employs a plethora of tricks to rouse his groggy family from their beds. However, the family is far from pleased with his antics, expressing their frustration through grumbles and groans at being woken up so early.
Perfectly capturing the humorous interactions between pets and their owners, this book uses simple rhyming text that is both engaging and easy for young readers to follow. The rhythmic verses paired with Lynley Dodd's enchanting illustrations make for a memorable reading experience that both children and adults will enjoy.
Slinky Malinki, Early Bird is an excellent addition to any child's bookshelf, particularly for those who love animal stories. It’s also an ideal choice for early readers with its catchy rhymes and vividly portrayed adventures. This delightful narrative celebrates the boundless energy of pets and the special bond they share with their human families.

About the Author
Lynley Dodd graduated from the Elam School of Art in Auckland with a diploma in Fine Arts, majoring in sculpture. She went on to teach art before taking a break to start a family. She began to work as a freelance illustrator and collaborated with author Eve Sutton on My Cat Likes To Hide in Boxes. There was no looking back as Lynley went on to write and illustrate her own books for children. Exuberant artwork and bouncy rhymes come together perfectly in books like Slinky Malinki and Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy. As well as being a visual delight, these are some of the most rewarding books for children and adults to read out loud. It comes as no surprise that, as a child, she adored Dr Seuss because of his 'crazy sounds and the fact that he took such liberties with the English language.' Other favourite authors included A A Milne and the fairy tales of The Grimm Brothers and Hans Christian Andersen. Today, Lynley is a big fan of Quentin Blake 'because of his humour and very clever art work.'
