The setting and characters immediately brought to mind the Knives Out movies, think a grand mansion, an intriguing cast, and the sense that everyone is hiding a secret. The author Evelyn Clarke was a mystery for a while too, recently revealed to be a collaboration between V. E. Schwab and Cat Clarke. Clever, twisty, and great fun!

With its Agatha Christie-style set-up of a remote location and a group of suspects meeting their demise one by one, there’s a lot of fun to be had in this satire set in the world of publishing. Even the book’s alleged author, "Evelyn Clark", is apparently a smokescreen for a collaboration between V. E. Schwab and Cat Clarke, dishing up a delicious tale of a group of writers invited to a Scottish island retreat by famed mystery author, Arthur Fletch. Fletch’s stranded guests are invited to complete their late host’s final manuscript... or die trying.

More seasoned mystery readers will likely unravel a few twists along the way, but it remains an entertaining and solidly written whodunnit with enough thrills and spills to make for a fast-paced page-turner, offering plenty of tension, and wry humour, along the way. From bursting the balloon of publishing industry pretension, to insider gossip, and the insecurity of writers, The Ending Writes Itself takes the writer’s deadline dead literally in an engrossing, entertaining, and thoroughly enjoyable read.
