‘Race Is Everything’

Art and Human Difference
Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
Race Is Everything examines the dubious yet influential ideas of racial science from the nineteenth to mid-twentieth century, particularly focusing on the depiction of African and Jewish people in art. David Bindman reveals how pseudosciences like phrenology linked external features, such as skull shape, to intelligence and character, forming a supposed scientific racial hierarchy. The book explores themes including the skull as a racial marker, the legacy of ancient Egypt in justifying slavery, Darwin's influence on race and aesthetics, and the racial politics in the work of Emil Nolde.

An examination of 'racial science' in the 19th and early 20th century, and how art was influenced by it.

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

Race Is Everything explores the spurious but influential ideas of so-called racial science in the nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth centuries, and how art was affected by it. David Bindman looks at race in general, but with particular concentration on attitudes toward and representations of people of African and Jewish descent.

He argues that behind all racial ideas is the belief that outward appearance—and especially skull shape, as studied in the pseudoscience of phrenology—can be correlated with inner character and intelligence, and that these could be used to create a seemingly scientific hierarchy of races. The book considers many aspects of these beliefs, including the skull as a racial marker; ancient Egypt as a precedent for Southern slavery; Darwin, race and aesthetics; the purported 'Mediterranean race'; the visual aspects of eugenics; and the racial politics of Emil Nolde.

Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?

Praised for its intellectual rigour and compassion, Race Is Everything is described as a profound and troubling study that highlights the role of visual arts in defining and perpetuating racial prejudices. It traces longstanding Western ideologies of beauty and difference from classical times to the modern era. Reviewers commend Bindman for offering both cultural criticism and practical insight to challenge ignorance and culturally ingrained hatred.
