In What the Dog Saw, Malcolm Gladwell encourages readers to see the world through curious and perceptive lenses by delving into a diverse collection of essays that span various facets of ordinary life. Through these essays, Gladwell explores themes ranging from criminology to food production, and from marketing to intelligence analysis, deftly shifting perspectives to unveil hidden patterns and extraordinary truths. Providing an intimate look at the topics he has researched for The New Yorker, Gladwell captures the nuances and complexities that often go unnoticed.

With his signature narrative style, Gladwell addresses everyday subjects that are often overlooked and provides compelling insights. He examines how Ron Popeil’s knack for infomercials revolutionised home cooking gadgets and investigates the genius behind Heinz ketchup’s universal appeal. Spectacularly, he ponders the lessons taught by dog trainer Cesar Millan and evaluates the science behind job interview techniques. Each essay stands alone as a unique piece, yet collectively, they form a rich tapestry that extends the boundaries of conventional wisdom and challenges preconceived beliefs.

One recurring theme in the book centers on perspectives that are often ignored or dismissed. Gladwell shines a spotlight on underdogs and underappreciated innovators, revealing the remarkable impact of their work on our daily lives. By scrutinising the stories of these figures, he uncovers the intricate dynamics that influence success, creativity, and human behaviour. His insightful analysis encourages readers to reflect on their own experiences and to question the ordinary, ultimately uncovering hidden connections and insights.

Another significant aspect of What the Dog Saw is its focus on the peculiar and the puzzling. Gladwell’s exploration of the mistakes and missteps in some of the most renowned fields of human endeavour demonstrates that errors are crucial to innovation and understanding. This approach fosters a deeper appreciation for the complexity and unpredictability inherent in human nature and our social constructs.

What the Dog Saw is Gladwell at his intellectual and narrative best, continuously asking thought-provoking questions and delivering surprising and enlightening answers. The essays not only illustrate his investigative prowess but also his unrivalled ability to weave intricate stories that engage and provoke thought. For anyone eager to see the world from a new perspective and to explore the extraordinary within the mundane, this book is an essential read.
