On the same day his wife gave birth to twins, Anthony Doerr received the Rome Prize, an honour that provided him a year-long stipend and studio in the heart of Rome. This unique confluence of events set the stage for Four Seasons in Rome, a beautifully crafted memoir that captures Doerr's year-long sojourn in one of the world's most enchanted cities while navigating the transformative journey of first-time parenthood.

Within the pages of Four Seasons in Rome, readers are transported to the bustling and historic piazzas, captivated by ancient temples, and drawn into the quiet reverence of subterranean cisterns. Doerr brings to life the city’s rich history and culture by engaging with the works of Pliny, Dante, and Keats—legendary chroniclers who also wandered through these storied streets.

The narrative crescendos with poignant moments, such as attending the vigil of a dying Pope John Paul II, and continues through the tender experiences of taking his twins to the Pantheon in December, marvelling as snowflakes drift through the oculus. Throughout his time in Rome, Doerr and his family are enveloped by the warmth and quirks of local butchers, grocers, and bakers. Their vibrant tales and unique parenting advice add an authentic texture to the memoir, making the streets of Rome come alive not just as a backdrop, but as a character in its own right.

Doerr’s reflections are intimate and profound, blending the awe of discovering Rome’s timeless wonders with the tender challenges of caring for newborns. His lyrical prose paints a vivid picture of both the city and the nuances of early parenthood, often intertwining the two in unexpected and enlightening ways.

Four Seasons in Rome is a celebration of Rome’s eternal charm, a heartfelt exploration of new beginnings, and a fascinating look at the creative process through the eyes of an acclaimed writer. Anthony Doerr's memoir offers a rich, evocative reading experience for those fascinated by travel, history, and the delicate beauty of life’s fleeting moments.
