Extraordinary Insects
Insects' influence cascades through our ecosystem like ripples on a pond. They existed long before the dinosaurs and will likely outlast us. In fact, insects outnumber the grains of sand on all the world’s beaches. They silently labour to provide us with food, uphold our ecosystems, heal our wounds, and even assist in biodegrading plastic.
This captivating book delves into the unexpected ways insects intersect with human life and nature. Sverdrup-Thygeson enlightens readers on how insects could be the answer to the antibiotics crisis, offer new methodologies for disaster relief, and inspire groundbreaking advancements in engineering with their unique flight mechanisms.
But there's so much more to the lives of these tiny, tireless workers. Extraordinary Insects unveils the drama, dreams, life, and death occurring on a millimetric scale. Despite their size, these creatures lead lives full of intrigue, fun, and wonder. Through Sverdrup-Thygeson's vivid narrative, readers gain a deep appreciation for the complexities and wonders of the insect world.
Nominated as one of the Sunday Times Nature Books of the Year 2019 and celebrated as a Sunday Times Bestseller, this book is a joy to read and a crucial eye-opener to the marvels lurking beneath our feet. Earth is, indubitably, the planet of insects, and Anne Sverdrup-Thygeson masterfully tells their extraordinary story.
