A book of memoirs and stimulating reflections on music by the legendary classical pianist, Sir Andras Schiff
Music Comes Out of Silence by Andras Schiff is a captivating exploration of the life and career of one of the most important pianists of our time. This stimulating account, presented in two parts, offers readers an intimate journey from Schiff's childhood in Hungary to his current achievements.
In conversations with Martin Meyer, Schiff delves into a diverse array of topics, ranging from his encounters with anti-Semitism and life under communist rule to his musical training under maestros like Pal Kadosa and Ferenc Rados. He also shares his insights on playing techniques and musical interpretation.
Schiff's writings provide a guided tour of Bach's 'Goldberg Variations', convey his public defiance against nationalistic and racist attitudesβa stance so strong that he refused to perform in Haider's Austria or Orban's Hungaryβand amuse with the playful 'Ten Commandments' for concertgoers.
More than just a memoir, Music Comes Out of Silence is a seminal collection of thoughts and experiences from one of the greatest musicians of our era, reflecting his unique artistry in making music emerge from silence.
