NEW YORK TIMES BOOK OF THE YEAR, WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE FOR BIOGRAPHY

Master Slave Husband Wife by Ilyon Woo is a gripping narrative that chronicles the extraordinary journey of Ellen and William Craft, an enslaved couple who dared to dream of freedom. This mesmerizing true story begins in 1848, a time marked by political upheaval and cries for democratic reform worldwide, when the Crafts devised a plan to escape from the suffocating bonds of slavery in Georgia. Through a combination of daring and ingenuity, Ellen disguised herself as a wealthy, disabled White man, while William accompanied her as "his" slave. Their audacious plan allowed them to traverse over 1,000 miles, navigating through steamboats, carriages, and trains, all the while boldly outwitting those who would seek to return them to bondage. The meticulous portrayal of their journey, laden with tension and suspense, keeps readers captivated, offering a close look at the perils and obstacles faced at every turn. The couple's extraordinary escape did not go unnoticed. Ellen and William became instant celebrities, their story spreading like wildfire and igniting public fascination. As they toured the United States, they shared stages with prominent abolitionists, their stirring accounts galvanising audiences and fuelling the anti-slavery movement. However, their newfound fame brought perils of its own. The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 heightened the stakes, making every American legally responsible for the capture and return of escaped slaves, thus forcing the Crafts to flee once again, this time to England. In England, they began a fresh chapter of their lives, contributing to the abolitionist cause from abroad while striving to rebuild and redefine their lives in freedom. Their story is a testament to the unyielding strength of the human spirit, the power of love and partnership, and the enduring pursuit of justice and equality. Master Slave Husband Wife is more than a historical account; it is a vivid and heart-wrenching love story intertwined with a relentless quest for liberty. Through meticulous research and compelling narrative, Ilyon Woo brings to life the electrifying saga of Ellen and William Craft, highlighting the courage, resourcefulness, and indomitable will that propelled them on their epic journey. This is a tale of hope and resilience, one that continues to inspire long after the last page is turned.
