New Releases to add to your TBR this week (18th August)

This week we've got a psychological thriller about memory and attempted murder, an experimental novel told in the voice of an LLM, non-fiction titles on pseudolaw and the Beckhams, and everything in between.

Fiction New Releases!

This week Freida fans will be stoked to have a new psychological thriller released this week (no doubt it will take less that 24 hours to read because you won't be able to put it down). 'Brain Damage' is about a dermatologist who suffers a brain injury after an attempted murder. As her gaps start to fill in, she begins to doubt the people she trusted most.

There's also a historical thriller from bestseller, Robert Harris, that sounds SO good, 'Agrippa'. Transporting us to Ancient Rome where Julius Caesar's nephew Octavius, is reeling after the death of his uncle, and made heir of the empire. Together with his closest friend, Agrippa, they rule the Roman Empire for twenty years, overcoming huge obstacles. But at the end - was the friendship ever real? This novel explores power, history, betrayal and secrets, and sounds utterly compelling.

One that I've already got waiting for me is the lit fic novel set in New York suburbs of the 1970s, 'The Amateur' by Chris Bohjalian. Described as "mesmerizing and darkly funny", this is right up my alley, a story told against the backdrop of perfect families and country clubs where secrets and affairs hide under the surface.

For romantasy readers make sure to check out the new standalone enemies to lovers, 'The Poison Daughter' by Sheila Masterson. I love the premise of this - an assasin who kills with her kiss, until it doesn't work against one man. I also love a good standalone read (perfect while we wait for ACOTAR to release!).

Lizzy's Pick: kluge by Pip Adam

I have just started reading this and it's like nothing else I've ever read. A novel about a company facing it's end, but told from the narration of an LLM in the style of a stand up comedy show (but also somehow written in a coding syntax structure in parts?!).

Honestly, sounds bizarre but if you enjoy experimental fiction and books that are satirical as well as philosophical, exploring what it means to be human and not, this will be right up your alley. I'm absolutely obsessed.

Also Pip Adam is a local Kiwi author and I can absolutely see this being up for the Ockham's next year.

If you're buying this online enjoy the surprise of not knowing which of the four vibrant covers you'll receive - I love the variations!

Non-Fiction New Releases!

Three new non-fiction titles to have an eye on this week! We've got a NZ military memoir about helicopter pilot and NZSAS soldier Mark Law in 'Lucky You're Tough' (we have already sold out of this after ONE DAY! But order your copy now to get one from the next shipment!), an explosive account of the drama and fallouts behind the Beckham family brand in 'Brand Beckham', as well as a fascinating and hilariously disturbing expose on the world of pseudolaw with 'Outlawed' by Stephen Young, one that I will absolutely be picking up. I can't resist any non-fiction that delves into online culture, conspiracy theories, and the way our fractured society can go so far off the rails.

Which one sounds most up your alley?

Children's Books

We have some adorable new board books for the tamariki too!

'Bluey and Bingo's Book of Scary Things' will be coming home for my four year old at some stage, a fun lift-the-flap book about our fave family finding a bunch of spooky and surprising things in amongst their day. 'Spot's Boat' is an adorable boat shaped board book about Spot and his mum sailing the seas, and 'Benjamin Bunny's Moonlight Mischief' is the perfect introduction for little hands to the cutest, cheekiest bunnies as they go for a night time adventure to the garden they definitely should not be visiting. Full of absolutely gorgeous illustrations and cute little flaps, this is a treasure that would make such a great little gift.

Check out this week's new releases!

Waiting on a book to release? Due to distribution delays, there are a large number of books that were originally releasing this month but are now expected in September for booksellers across the entire country. Make sure to check out the product page to see if the ETA has changed and if there are any questions about a particular book or a pre-order you've placed please get in touch.

Let us know which new release you are adding to your own TBR!

Lizzy makes sure the Book Hero bookstore is an integral part of our local Hobsonville community, welcoming readers of all ages with a genuine kindness and love of books. The Fantastic Mr Fox ignited her passion for books as a child, and now she’s read thousands of books and loves matching the right book to the right reader - both in our bookstore and online. When she’s not recommending her next favourite read, she’s enjoying life’s small joys with her husband, Edd, and their chaotic but lovely child.
