Our bookshop and online store are open seven days a week, which means customer orders never stop coming in. To keep our overnight delivery promise, books need to be picked, packed, and shipped quickly and accurately every day of the week. Amy plays a key role in making that happen over the weekend, helping keep everything running smoothly behind the scenes - from picking customer orders to bringing books from the warehouse into the bookstore for customers to browse.
Read on to learn more about Amy's role and what she loves most about being part of the team at Book Hero.
Describe your role! What does a Warehouse Hero at Book Hero do?
My role on Saturday is to find a home on the shelves for as many new books, puzzles, board games and toys as possible, and then pick the weekend customer orders on Sunday so they’re ready on Monday morning for the team to meet our overnight delivery promise to our customers!
What happens behind the scenes in the warehouse on the weekend?
While Eve, Hannah or Lizzy are busy helping customers in the bookshop on the weekends, I’m behind the scenes in the warehouse shelving and picking items for all the weekend delivery orders! I’m also the runner for any items that customers in the bookshop want to see in person, so you may see me popping in and out briefly with stacks of books, puzzles and boardgames.
What role do you play in helping make sure customers get their orders as quickly as possible?
My role as part of the weekend team is to make it easy for Monday’s team to get straight to sending out your packages on time!
What's the most satisfying part of your role?
Being surrounded by books all day while listening to some tunes.
What are some of the challenges that come with shipping thousands of books every week?
Sometimes finding space on the shelves for new arrivals can be a bit tricky, so I have to get creative with how I arrange them.
What does a great day in the warehouse look like?
A great day in the warehouse looks like getting all the orders picked and ready to be fulfilled by the team the next day.
What's your favourite thing about the Book Hero team?
My favourite thing about the Book Hero team is how committed everyone is to making sure customers receive the best experience possible, whether that’s through customer service chats (no AI robots here), speedy delivery, or even Alastair’s coffees, the team here gives their all!
What's the most memorable book you’ve fetched for a customer?
Definitely the donut daddy cookbook, but hey no judgement!
Books, Puzzles & Board Games
What kind of books do you enjoy reading?
I enjoy reading a variety of books, but I would say I mostly enjoy reading fantasy and psychological thrillers.
What's a book you'd recommend to every Book Hero customer?
One of my all time favorite books is the Six of Crows Duology by Leigh Bardugo. The characters, the storyline, the romantic subplots… chef’s kiss. Chapter 40 doesn’t exist, iykyk.
What's your favourite genre and why?
My favourite genres would probably be fantasy with just a hint of a romantic subplot, but I also enjoy reading psychology books that delve into trauma (I’m currently studying Psychology), poetry books like Edgar Allen Poe’s works and She’s Magic and Midnight Lace, as well as books that take me back to my childhood like Wings of Starlight.
Do you enjoy playing Board Games? If so, what are your favourites?
I do enjoy playing board games, and I personally like Articulate because I find it mentally stimulating to find creative ways to describe a person or object etc.
What's a board game you'd recommend to every Book Hero customer?
I’d go with Bananagrams, it’s a great family friendly game that gets everyone’s brains ticking with how to use all the tiles to form words.
What are you reading right now?
I’m not reading anything currently, but my next read will be A Stage Set For Villains by Shannon J. Spann. It sounds like a really interesting premise, and the dark theatre setting with sharp banter and a slow-burn romance is a must-read for me!
Personality and story
What drew you to Book Hero?
I first found the website while looking for a book about a year back and saw they had a huge range with great prices, so I knew I was going to be buying from them A LOT. But then I saw a job application pop up and I knew I had to apply, because who wouldn’t want to be surrounded by books all day?
What's something a customer might be surprised to learn about you?
I think customers might be surprised to learn that I play a variety of musical instruments, including the timpani, flute, tenor saxophone and the bagpipes.
When you're not at Book Hero, what do you enjoy doing?
When I’m not at Book Hero, I tend to be either studying for uni or hanging out with my cat, Lucy.
