During the school holidays we ran the Book Hero's Apprentice short story and colouring competition.
We were absolutely blown away by the entries we received over the holidays and want to thank all the children and young people who took the time to enter and share with us their creation! The creativity and sense of fun on display is inspiring and worth celebrating.
Nicola beamed in remotely from her overseas adventure to select the lucky winners, and we know she had a tough time selecting just six winners from the pool of amazing entries. We trust that lots of fun was had regardless of the outcome! All our Young Heroes have received a prize for participation and our sincere thanks for entering.
Congratulations to the lucky winners, who are listed below:
- Hazel Kelly (age 13)

In a town of darkness and despair there lived a librarian with the power of super speed reading. But also this librarian was not any ordinary librarian he was one of the bravest librarians in history! His name was Max. There was one evil enemy named Dr Scissors!Β
One time Dr Scissors made a giant robot to destroy all the books in the universe! A few days later, Max the librarian and Dr Scissors had an ultimate showdown! Dr Scissors had a lot of mini scissor robots in his giant robot to destroy all the books! Max the librarian used his super speed reading power to flip the book pages fast enough to blow every one of the robots all away.
Soon Dr Scissors gave up, and he was taken to jail and got locked up forever, and he was never ever heard from again, and all the books in the universe were safe once more, thanks to Max the super librarian. THE END.Β

Books were disappearingβeverywhere. Libraries? Empty. Bookstores? Wiped out. Even peopleβs bookshelves at home were mysteriously bare. No one knew why, but the world was freaking out.
Thatβs when Book Hero Paige showed up, flying through the sky on her bookmark hoverboard, determined to save the day. And right beside her was her partner-in-crime-fighting: Captain Quillβa superhero with a magical feather pen that could rewrite reality (yeah, heβs pretty cool).
They followed the trail of missing books to an abandoned paper mill, which, honestly, looked straight out of a horror movie. Inside, paper flew everywhere like a blizzard made of words.
And in the middle of it all? The villain. A creepy figure in all black called The Eraser. βIf I canβt be in a story, no one can,β he growled, eyes glowing weirdly. βSay goodbye to books forever!β
βNot happening,β Paige snapped. She held up a glowing book, while Captain Quill scribbled in midair. The pen sparked, and suddenlyβwhoosh!βThe Eraser got sucked into the pages of a brand-new book titled The Adventures of Redemption.
He was gone. Books started reappearing like magicβon shelves, in backpacks, under pillows. People actually cheered in the streets.
Up in the sky, Paige and Captain Quill fist-bumped like total legends. βBooks are back,β Paige said, grinning. βAnd this story? Has a happy ending.βΒ

The world has been plummeted in peace, but Anna couldnβt sleep. She never could- last week it was the coyotes and now, there was something keeping her awake, something she couldnβt put her finger onβ¦
Β Many books have been missing and somehow it was all her favorite ones- βThe Observologist had gone for walks, not to mention her new dream singers book where she had only just brought it two weeks ago.
Β Scratch, scratch, scratch. There was something at the window, something she probably didnβt want to know what it was. Her books disappeared one by one, or more like they were never there. Β It didnβt really matter about that right now, but what could she do to get them back and worst of all, what if sheβll never comes back? The noise didnβt really help her and she decided what must be done, after all if she didnβt take action now- tomorrow, another one of her books would have gone missingβ¦
After that quick lesson, there was no time to waste. She randomly snatched a book from Johnnyβs infinite bookshelf and placed it upon the open windowsill. Β Once that was done, Anna settled into the darkness with her torch. The leaves rustled every now and then, sending the chill down her spine-would this be?. To her surprise a shadow, lurked in the darkness and quickly she the bright sword of light at it , but the face was so eerily familiar it made her gasp. It was her brotherβ¦Β
