Book Hero Recommends: Our Team’s Favourite Female Authors

Yesterday was International Women's Day, so we asked some of the women of Book Hero to share their favourite female author - and why. Today’s theme is crime thrillers, so extra points were awarded for authors from that genre!

Female authors we are obsessed with!

Shirl (Sales Hero)

Lisa Jewell - My favourite author in the genre. Her books are great, fast-paced thrillers, and each of her novels feels very different from the last. You will enjoy them if you like Freida McFadden. If you are short on time and want to dive straight into a book and get hooked quickly, her books are perfect for that.

Lizzy (Bookshop Hero)

Agatha Christie - She is still a great seller, and I even accidentally got a tattoo of one of her quotes: "Just to be alive is a grand thing." My grandmother was a high school teacher and always said her books were a great way to hook people into reading. My favourite is And Then There Were None - an absolute classic of hers that still feels fresh and twisty even today.

Amelia (Category Assistant Hero)

"I read a lot of books, Dylan! If I had to recommend just one author for thrillers, I would say Freida McFadden. Her books are super easy to read, she creates so much tension, and the endings are really good - you never see them coming. She also writes incredibly fast - she is a real powerhouse and has new books coming out all the time."

Siobhan (Warehouse Sidekick)

"Sarah J. Maas or Rebecca Yarros. They both got me back into reading again, and I have not stopped since. Their books are so easy to get swept up in - big worlds, memorable characters, and stories that completely pull you in. Once I started reading them, I found it really hard to put the books down."

Sacha (Social Media Hero)

"Laini Taylor - because she is one of the most beautiful and eloquent writers I have ever read. Her fantasy writing and world-building are incredible.

Martina Cole - because she is so good at what she does. Her gritty crime stories span decades, often starting in the 1920s and running through to the 70s and 80s."

Roopa (Library & Commercial Sales Hero)

"Li Chen - she creates graphic novels based on her cat, Detective Beans. She is a New Zealand author, and the books are fun for both kids and adults. The artwork is really cute, especially if you love cats."

Marnie (Support Hero)

"Jacqueline Wilson was a childhood favourite of mine, her characters always felt really real and easy to connect with. Her stories had many strong female characters exploring a variety of difficult real-life scenarios. Once you read one, you'll want to read them all."

Hannah (Bookstore Sidekick)

"Donna Tartt, because the way she writes is so insanely detailed. You really feel like you are inside the characters’ heads, and it becomes a pretty wild reading experience."
