A woman's journey from her father's harem through the Islamic Revolution.
Daughter of Persia by Sattareh Farman-Farmaian explores the life of the daughter of a once-powerful and wealthy Iranian prince. Raised and educated in the 1920s and 1930s within a Persian harem compound, along with numerous mothers and more than 30 brothers and sisters, Farman-Farmaian's story is one of courage and transformation.
As a young woman, she broke away from Muslim tradition to travel to America, becoming the first Persian to study at the University of Southern California. This experience in the West inspired her to lift her own people out of backwardness and poverty. Returning to Iran, she founded the Tehran School of Social Work. For over 20 years, Sattareh and her students actively fought against poverty, disease, and overcrowding.
However, shortly after the collapse of the Shah's regime, she was compelled to flee the country for fear of her life. In this account, Farman-Farmaian offers an insider's perspective on Iran's journey through the 20th century and the events surrounding the Islamic revolution.
