Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description
Italian Shoes by Henning Mankell is a poignant and introspective novel that delves deep into themes of regret, redemption, and the human condition.

Frederick Welin, a once-prominent surgeon, has retreated to a secluded island in the Swedish archipelago after a catastrophic error during surgery shattered his career. For nearly twelve years, he has lived alone, haunted by his failure and disconnection from the world. As the harsh winter grips his frozen sanctuary, Welin's solitude is abruptly interrupted one morning by the sight of a solitary figure laboriously making its way towards him across the ice.

That figure is Harriet, the only woman Frederick ever truly loved and cruelly abandoned four decades ago to pursue his medical studies in America. Harriet, now in the twilight of her life and battling a terminal illness, has come to ask Frederick to fulfil a promise he made many years ago. She wishes to visit a serene lake in northern Sweden, a place imbued with poignant childhood memories and tied to his father. Bound by his old pledge and perhaps seeking a form of atonement, Frederick agrees to guide Harriet to this secluded and beautiful pool hidden amidst the forest.

Their journey through the stark, snow-clad landscape becomes a voyage of self-discovery for Frederick. As they traverse the frozen terrain, he reflects deeply on his impoverished childhood, the decisions that led to his present isolation, and the profound impact of his abandonment of Harriet. The desolate beauty of the landscape mirrors the isolation and emotional barrenness that Frederick feels. However, amid this bleakness lies a potential for understanding and reconciliation.

Yet, the journey does not conclude as simply as it begins. Harriet has kept a remarkable surprise until the end, a revelation that has the power to further change the contours of Frederick's quiet existence. This extraordinary turn of events compels him to confront his past decisions with newfound insight and compassion.

If you are captivated by Italian Shoes, do not miss the continuation of Frederick Welin's story in Henning Mankell's latest novel, After the Fire, now available.

Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?

Henning Mankell is praised as a vivid and compelling storyteller by the Independent. The Irish Times highlights his skill in creating a unique mental and emotional atmosphere, while the Sunday Times notes the novel's ambition and ability to transcend Mankell's earlier work. Barry Forshaw from the Daily Express commends the authoritative plotting and characterisation, focusing on themes of human fallibility and ageing. Kieran Meeke from Metro describes Mankell's writing as a quiet masterpiece, touching on the strength of women, men's capacity for brutality, and the impermanence of life.

About the Author

Henning Mankell (1948-2015) became a worldwide phenomenon with his crime writing, gripping thrillers and atmospheric novels set in Africa. His prizewinning and critically acclaimed Inspector Wallander Mysteries continue to dominate bestseller lists all over the globe and his books have been translated into forty-five languages and made into numerous international film and television adaptations: most recently the BAFTA-award-winning BBC television series Wallander, starring Kenneth Branagh. Driven by a desire to change the world and to fight against racism and nationalism, Mankell devoted much of his time to working with charities in Africa, including SOS Children's Villages and PLAN International, where he was also director of the Teatro Avenida in Maputo. In 2008, the University of St Andrews conferred Henning Mankell with an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters in recognition of his major contribution to literature and to the practical exercise of conscience. www.henningmankell.com
