The Restless Republic by Anna Keay is an enthralling exploration of a seismic period in British history, vividly bringing to life an era of radical political upheaval and social transformation. Set during the tumultuous decade following the execution of King Charles I in 1649, this meticulously researched narrative captures the essence of a nation grappling with the concept of a republic and newfound sovereignty.

As the monarchy was abolished and the Parliament asserted control, the people of Britain were thrust into an unprecedented experiment in governance. The uncertainty and rebellion that characterised these eleven years are depicted through the lives of several remarkable individuals who were at the heart of these changes. Dive into the world of Anna Trapnel, whose visionary prophecies captivated the public, and John Bradshaw, the steadfast lawyer who played a pivotal role in the trial and execution of the king.

Among the myriad characters, you'll also encounter Marchamont Nedham, an ingenious newspaperman who wielded the power of the press to shape public opinion, and Gerrard Winstanley, a pioneering advocate for communal land ownership and social equality. The scientific brilliance of William Petty, whose detailed mapping of Ireland led to significant land dispossession, and the unwavering loyalty of the Countess of Derby, defending the last Royalist bastion on the Isle of Man, further enrich the narrative.

The Restless Republic transcends the confines of traditional historical accounts by blending engaging storytelling with detailed scholarship. From the bustling streets of London to the remote corners of Cornwall and Connacht, Anna Keay masterfully navigates through the varied landscapes and socio-political layers of the British Isles. This comprehensive portrayal captures the confusion, ambition, and resilience of those living through a revolutionary era.

This compelling book is not only a chronicle of a significant historical event but also a testament to human adaptability and the quest for new governance. It provides a fresh perspective on how this revolutionary period influenced the future course of British history. With its rich detail and dynamic cast of characters, The Restless Republic ensures an immersive reading experience.

Recognised for its outstanding contribution to historical literature, The Restless Republic was awarded The Sunday Times History Book of the Year 2022 and won the Pol Roger Duff Cooper Prize for Non-Fiction. It was also shortlisted for the prestigious Baillie Gifford Prize, making it an essential addition to the library of anyone interested in British history, political revolutions, and the enduring human spirit in the face of change.
