Lady in Waiting by Anne Glenconner offers a rare and enchanting glimpse into the world of British aristocracy and the often unseen lives of those who serve the royal family. This extraordinary memoir recounts Lady Glenconner's own remarkable journey, from her childhood amidst the grandeur of one of England's stately homes to her unique roles as Maid of Honour at Queen Elizabeth II's coronation and Lady in Waiting to Princess Margaret. Through trials of tragedy and moments of triumph, Anne Glenconner's life has been one of resilience, courage, and wit.

Born into the affluent and influential Coke family, Anne was the eldest child of the 5th Earl of Leicester, growing up in the opulent Holkham Hall. Despite her noble beginnings, she faced the deeply ingrained gender prejudices of her time, being labelled by her own family as 'the greatest disappointment' for not being able to inherit the family estate. Yet she formed lasting bonds with the young Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret, who often visited her home as playmates.

Anne's story takes an extraordinary turn as she steps into the role of Maid of Honour at Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation, a position that placed her at the very heart of royal history. Her later service to Princess Margaret as Lady in Waiting provided her with an intimate view of the inner workings of the British monarchy, allowing her to forge a close and enduring friendship with the princess.

Her marriage to Colin Tennant, Lord Glenconner, brought a new dimension to her life. Colin's purchase and transformation of the Caribbean island of Mustique into an exclusive paradise attracted high profile visitors, including eminent figures like Mick Jagger and David Bowie, and became a beloved retreat for Princess Margaret. Despite the splendour of Mustique, Anne's life with Colin was often tumultuous, marked by his volatile nature and extravagant lifestyle.

The memoir delves deep into the challenges faced by Anne, including personal tragedies, such as the loss of her two sons, and her husband's unpredictable and often difficult personality. With steadfastness and an indomitable spirit, she navigated these adversities, emerging with profound insights and a deep appreciation for life’s joys.

Lady Glenconner’s narrative is enhanced by her remarkable wit and infectious optimism, providing readers not only with deliciously gossipy tales of aristocratic life and royal circles but also with heartfelt reflections on the complexities of duty, service, and personal resilience.

Critics have praised Lady in Waiting for its candidness and charm. Jane Ridley of the Spectator hails it as 'the best royal book by miles', while the Sunday Times claims it will leave your 'jaw dropping at least three times every chapter.' The Daily Mail commends it as 'a captivating account of a life lived with resilience and grace', and the Daily Express admires Lady G for writing with 'infectious joy and optimism.' Jilly Cooper finds the book 'tremendously touching' and impossible to put down, and Rupert Everett describes it as 'funny and touching', like peering 'through a keyhole at a lost world.'

Lorraine Kelly unequivocally states, 'I can't recommend it highly enough,' while the Times appreciates its gentle wisdom and inspiration. Miranda Seymour of the Financial Times brands it 'a candid, witty and stylish memoir,' and the Wall Street Journal lauds its emotional resonance. The Guardian calls it 'both candid and kind', encapsulating the stoicism and discretion that define Anne Glenconner's approach to life and her career.

Lady in Waiting is not just a memoir but a testament to an extraordinary life interwoven with history, filled with anecdotes that are both touching and illuminating. It is a book for anyone fascinated by the British royal family, historical biography, and the enduring human spirit.

About the Author

Lady Glenconner was born Lady Anne Coke in 1932, the eldest daughter of the 5th Earl of Leicester, and growing up in their ancestral estate at Holkham Hall in Norfolk. A Maid of Honour at the Queen's Coronation, she married Lord Glenconner in 1956. They had 5 children together of whom 3 survive. In 1958 she and her husband began to transform the island of Mustique into a paradise for the rich and famous. They granted a plot of land to Princess Margaret who built her favourite home there. She was appointed Lady in Waiting to Princess Margaret in 1971 and kept this role - accompanying her on many state occasions and foreign tours - until her death in 2002. Lord Glenconner died in 2010, leaving everything in his will to his former employee. She now lives in a farmhouse near Kings Lynn in Norfolk.
