"I try to read people's lives," says photographer Mario Marino. In this new photo book, the Austrian-born camera artist presents over 220 colour and black-and-white photographs from some of the most remote areas of Ethiopia, Tanzania, Sudan, and Kenya.
Stunning landscapes combine with powerful portraiture, capturing in particular remote communities whose heritage and ways of life are threatened by the combined forces of tourism, technology, and globalisation. With his subjects illuminated by the sunlight alone, particular attention is given to traditional markers upon the body: face paint, hairstyles, and jewellery.

About the Author
Mario Marino was born in 1967 in Hall in Tyrol. He has lived and worked as a freelance photographer in Germany since 2000. On his travels, which he has undertaken not only through Africa but also through Cuba, India, Nepal and Mexico, he has created intensive portrait series that reveal his emphatic visual language. Marino's works have been shown in numerous galleries and museums nationally and internationally, including Amsterdam, Basel, Berlin, Bristol, Brussels, Dubai and Miami.
