- Provides practical, evidence-based guidance for survivors, frontline professionals, and organisations seeking safer, more accountable care systems.
- Offers an authoritative perspective from an author with lived experience and deep expertise in advocacy, safeguarding, and systemic reform.
A must-read for those abused in care and for the professionals engaged in front-line care – teachers, doctors, nurses, counsellors, psychologists, police, clergy, youth group leaders, sports coaches and other service providers.
Every week, a teacher, religious leader, doctor or other professional is reported for exploiting the very people they are meant to protect. Abuse by those entrusted with care is one of society’s deepest betrayals and a systemic problem that can no longer be accepted as collateral damage in care systems worldwide.
Drawing on survivor testimony, legal cases, government inquiries, and international research, this book reveals the dynamics that enable abuse, the devastating impacts on victims and communities, and the institutional failures that allow harm to persist. Each chapter opens with a personal narrative, followed by critical discussion and practical, evidence-based guidance.
For survivors and their loved ones, this book offers validation and pathways to understanding and justice. For frontline professionals, it is an essential guide to using power safely. For organisational leaders, it provides a blueprint for responding to abuse and creating the culture change and safeguarding practices needed to prevent it.

About the Author
Jacinda Thompson brings a rare combination of lived experience, professional insight, and advocacy to her work. After surviving sexual abuse by an Anglican priest in 2005 and pursuing justice through a landmark Human Rights Review Tribunal case, she became a leading voice for survivors of abuse in care. She is an active member of the Network of Survivors of Abuse in Faith-based Institutions and has advocated nationally and internationally, including presenting to the United Nations Human Rights Council in 2024. Jacinda has contributed to major reforms, speaking at the Abuse in Care Royal Commission hearings and advising the Crown Response Unit on the design of an independent redress system.
Her background spans teaching in Australia and New Zealand, school governance, youth ministry, sports leadership, and safeguarding education. With a strong interest in psychology and trauma dynamics, she is committed to creating safer care systems. Jacinda lives in rural Marlborough with her family.
