Noteworthy Australian women featured in the volume include Dame Elizabeth Couchman, Dame Kate Campbell, Dame Doris Fitton, Dame Zara Holt, and Lady (Maie) Casey. Although many of these women achieved prominence in professions conventionally regarded as the preserve of women, othersβsuch as Ruby Boye-Jones, a coast-watcher; Ellen Cashman, a union organiser; Elsie Chauvel, a film-maker; Dorothy Crawford, a radio producer; Ruth Dobson, a diplomat; Mary Hodgkin, an anthropologist; Margaret Kelly, a restaurateur; and Patricia Jarrett, a journalistβdemonstrate that some women, at least, were breaking free of the constraints of tradition.
