Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

Australian Dictionary of Biography Vol 17 A-K contains 658 biographies of individuals who died between 1981 and 1990. As the first of two volumes for the decade, it presents a colourful mosaic of twentieth-century Australian life.

This edition includes biographies of well-known identities such as Sir Henry Bolte, Sir Robert Askin, Sir Reginald Ansett, Sir Macfarlane Burnet, Sir Raphael and Lady Cilento, Sir Arthur Coles, Robert Holmes-Γ -Court, Sir Warwick Fairfax, Sir Edmund Herring, Albert Facey, Donald Friend, Sir Roy Grounds, Sir Bernard Heinze, and Sir Robert Helpmann.

Noteworthy Australian women featured in the volume include Dame Elizabeth Couchman, Dame Kate Campbell, Dame Doris Fitton, Dame Zara Holt, and Lady (Maie) Casey. Although many of these women achieved prominence in professions conventionally regarded as the preserve of women, othersβ€”such as Ruby Boye-Jones, a coast-watcher; Ellen Cashman, a union organiser; Elsie Chauvel, a film-maker; Dorothy Crawford, a radio producer; Ruth Dobson, a diplomat; Mary Hodgkin, an anthropologist; Margaret Kelly, a restaurateur; and Patricia Jarrett, a journalistβ€”demonstrate that some women, at least, were breaking free of the constraints of tradition.
