How to complete your paint by numbers:

  1. Clear an area to work and cover with old newspaper to keep it clean or pin the canvas to a pinboard. Prepare a jar/glass of water to rinse your brushes.
  2. Use the corresponding colours to paint over the numbered areas on the canvas.
  3. Start by painting over the larger areas/cells, then proceed to the smaller ones.
  4. Prevent smudges by starting at the top of the canvas so that drying paint stays above your hand.
  5. Assemble your frame by pushing the grooves together, then use a small hammer or hard object to tap them square into place.
  6. Lay the finished printed canvas over the rounded edge side of the frame and use the pins provided to pin it to the flat back side of the frame.
  7. Hang on your wall with the hooks provided for you to enjoy.

Additional Tips & Tricks

  • Use the paint on the lids of the pot first as this will be the first to dry out.
  • Don't stay on any one colour for too long to keep the paint fresh - we recommend no longer than 10 minutes.
  • You can iron the back of the canvas before starting to keep the canvas flat if just laying on newspaper, not required it you are pining it to a pinboard. Remember to have the iron on a low setting and use a teatowel in between the iron and canvas.
  • Use the 'blobbing' technique to blob paint over the numbers of lighter colours so you can't see the numbers. Do this once you have finished one coat of this colour and the previous coat has dried.
  • Keep leftover paints for your own creations! Our paint by numbers kits come with enough paint to complete the artwork so you will always have paint leftover.
  • If you have accidentally used the wrong colour, don't worry! Wait until  the paint dries and apply the correct colour over the top.
  • Make sure that your paint pot caps are closed properly after use.

Frequently Asked Questions

About Paint By Numbers

How do you start a paint by numbers kit?

Start by setting up a clean, well-lit workspace with water for rinsing brushes and something to protect your table. Lay out your canvas and paints, then match each numbered paint pot to the same numbered section on the canvas. Many painters find it easiest to begin with larger sections before moving on to smaller details.

Do you paint by numbers in order?

You don’t have to paint strictly in numerical order. Some people prefer painting one colour at a time across the canvas, while others work section by section. A common tip is to paint from the top of the canvas downward to avoid smudging wet paint.

What if I use the wrong colour in paint by numbers?

If you accidentally use the wrong colour, simply allow the paint to dry completely and then paint over the section with the correct colour. The acrylic paints used in most paint by numbers kits provide good coverage.

How do you stop paint from drying out in paint by numbers kits?

To prevent paint from drying out, always close the paint pot lid tightly after each use. Try to work with one colour at a time rather than leaving multiple pots open. If paint thickens slightly, a tiny drop of water can help restore a smoother consistency.

How do you flatten a paint by numbers canvas?

If your canvas arrives with creases, you can flatten it by placing a cloth over the back of the canvas and gently ironing it on a low heat setting. You can also place heavy books on the canvas overnight to help it lie flat before painting.

How long does paint by numbers take to complete?

Completion time varies depending on the size and complexity of the design. Smaller kits may take a few hours, while detailed canvases can take several sessions over multiple days. Many people enjoy paint by numbers as a relaxing hobby they can return to over time.

What do you do after finishing a paint by numbers painting?

Once finished, you can mount the canvas on a frame, stretch it over the included wooden frame if provided, or place it in a picture frame. Your completed paint by numbers artwork is then ready to display.
