Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
Collateral Damage by Zygmunt Bauman explores the unintended yet devastating consequences of social inequality in contemporary society. Drawing parallels with the military term for unplanned harm during armed conflict, Bauman reveals how the poor become the 'collateral damage' of a consumer-driven world, marginalised and excluded from the rights enjoyed by others. The book critically examines poverty not as a criminal issue but as a profound social problem rooted in shrinking opportunities and profit-oriented economies.

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

The term collateral damage has recently been added to the vocabulary of military forces to refer to the unintended consequences of armed interventions, consequences that are unplanned but nevertheless damaging and often very costly in human and personal terms. But collateral damage is not unique to the world of armed intervention - it is also one of the most salient and striking dimensions of contemporary social inequality. The inflammable mixture of growing social inequality and the rising volume of human suffering marginalized as β€˜collateral’ is becoming one of the most cataclysmic problems of our time.

For the political class, poverty is commonly seen as a problem of law and order - a matter of how to deal with individuals, such as unemployed youths, who fall foul of the law. But treating poverty as a criminal problem obscures the social roots of inequality, which lie in the combination of a consumerist life philosophy propagated and instilled by a consumer-oriented economy, on the one hand, and the rapid shrinking of life chances available to the poor, on the other. In our contemporary, liquid-modern world, the poor are the collateral damage of a profit-driven, consumer-oriented society - β€˜aliens inside’ who are deprived of the rights enjoyed by other members of the social order.

In this new book, Zygmunt Bauman - one of the most original and influential social thinkers of our time - examines the selective affinity between the growth of social inequality and the rise in the volume of β€˜collateral damage’ and considers its implications and its costs.

Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?

Praised for its insightful critique, Collateral Damage is described by the Morning Star as cataloguing the "irreparable damage and corruption visited on the fabric of humanity" under modern capitalism. The Times Higher Education applauds Bauman's wise and passionate voice, highlighting his commitment to a transformative mission for sociology amidst rising social evils.

  • Postmodern Ethics
Zygmunt Bauman's powerful and persuasive study of the postmodern perspective on ethics is particularly welcome. For Bauman the great issues of ethics have lost none of their topicality: they simply need to be seen, and dealt with, in a wholly new way. Our era, he suggests, may actually represent a dawning, rather than a twilight, for ethics.

  • Culture and Art
The sociological imagination and the artistic imagination have been historically intertwined, at once reciprocal and conflicting, complementary and tensional. This connection is nowhere more apparent than in the work of Zygmunt Bauman. His conception and practice of sociology were always infused with a literary and artistic sensibility. He wrote extensively on the relationship between sociology and the arts, and especially...

  • My Life in Fragments
Zygmunt Bauman was one of the great social thinkers of our time: inventor of the idea of liquid modernity, he transformed our way of thinking about the social conditions shaping our lives today. This is not a Diary: while these observations were recorded in autumn 2010 and spring 2011 in the form of dated entries, they are not a personal reflection but an attempt to capture signs of our times in their movementβ€”possibly at birth, at a stage when they are still barely perceptible, and in any case before they have matured into...

  • In Praise of Literature
In this new book, In Praise of Literature, Zygmunt Bauman and Riccardo Mazzeo examine the contentious issue of the relation between literature (and the arts in general) and sociology (or, more generally, a branch of the humanities claiming scientific status). • Management in a Liquid Modern World
Management has been one of the driving forces of the last century, indeed an idea and a language that colonised most other institutions, areas of human activity, and walks of life. Sketches in the Theory of Culture is a remarkable work by all measures. For decades, it was thought to be lost....
