Love Letters: Vita and Virginia
Eavesdrop on the affair that inspired Virginia to write her most fantastical novel, Orlando, and discover a relationship that - even a hundred years later - feels radical and relatable.
WITH A NEW INTRODUCTION FROM ALISON BECHDEL, AUTHOR OF FUN HOME AND CREATOR OF THE BECHDEL TEST.
Love Letters: Vita and Virginia delves into the passionate and intellectually stimulating exchange between two of the twentieth century's most prominent female writers, Vita Sackville-West and Virginia Woolf. This collection of letters and diary entries captures the evolution of their relationship, from the initial sparks of attraction to a deep, enduring friendship and literary partnership. At once radical, relatable, and rebellious, their correspondences reveal the nuances of love, desire, and the creative spirit guiding their lives.
When Virginia Woolf met Vita Sackville-West at a dinner party in 1922, she was initially unimpressed by Vita’s conversation but captivated by her presence. Little did she know, this encounter would lead to nearly two decades of entrancing courtship, collaboration, and camaraderie, spanning letters and diary entries brimming with wit, warmth, and yearning.
These intimate writings provide a rare glimpse into their personal lives, allowing readers to eavesdrop on the complexities and joys of their interaction. The letters portray a dynamic of constant change as both women navigate the intricacies of their affection. Amidst this romance, Virginia found inspiration for one of her most famous works, Orlando — a tribute to Vita and a testament to their profound connection.
The correspondence came to an abrupt halt with Virginia Woolf's tragic suicide in 1941, marking the end of an era of rich personal and literary symbiosis. Love Letters: Vita and Virginia stands as a testament to their extraordinary relationship, its impact resonating even a hundred years later. This collection showcases the timelessness of their bond and the revolutionary nature of their love.
This edition includes a fresh introduction from Alison Bechdel, renowned for her graphic memoir Fun Home and creator of the Bechdel Test, offering contemporary insights into the lives and letters of Vita and Virginia.
