The Art of the New Urbanism, Volume 1
The New Urbanism has dramatically transformed the way illustrations are used to advance the dialogue of community planning and place making. New Urbanists have revived and advanced techniques of visual communication that enable professionals, elected officials and citizens from all walks of life to engage in designing their neighbourhoods and communities. While created as means to an end, these visualisations are often compelling artworks in their own right.
The Art of the New Urbanism features the first-ever, comprehensive collection of New Urbanist artworks, with more than 200 selected works produced by more than 100 practitioners and firms. The collected works include plans, renderings of buildings, streetscapes and gathering places, studies of precedents, and photographs of built projects. This book includes seminal material from the early history of the movement that has inspired generations of community building professionals, as well as a wide variety of hand-drawn and digital works that represent methods used today.
Through their commentaries on each work, designers share the place making principles visualised through their plans and renderings and how their work responded to the public process. The Art of the New Urbanism contributors include:
