Deep South

Deep South of America is a place of contradictions. There is the warm, open spirit of the soul food cafes, found in every town, no matter how small. There is the ruined grandeur of numberless ghostly towns, long abandoned by the industries that built them. This book is about this place.

On road trips spanning four seasons, wending along rural highways, Paul Theroux travels to America's Deep South to uncover the truth behind the myths, the fictions and the lies. He visits gun shows and small-town churches, labourers in Arkansas, and parts of Mississippi where they still call the farm up the road 'the plantation'.

Deep South by Paul Theroux takes us on an immersive and riveting journey into the heart of America's enigmatic South. For over fifty years, Theroux has ventured to the world's farthest corners—China, India, Africa, the Pacific Islands, South America, Russia, and beyond—and brought these regions to vivid life with his precise, evocative prose. In Deep South, Theroux shifts his focus to a region much closer to home. This time, he embarks on an exploration of an often misunderstood part of his own country: the American South. Over the course of four seasonal journeys, Theroux travels through North and South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, and Arkansas. His travels allow readers to see the South through his keen, discerning eyes. Theroux masterfully captures the region's stunning and diverse landscapes—from arid deserts and towering mountains to the storied Mississippi River. However, his narrative does not stop with scenery. It delves deeper to uncover the stories of the people who inhabit the South. He writes about the lives, struggles, and triumphs of farmers, preachers, gun show traders, and literary figures. Paul Theroux's ability to make the unfamiliar familiar shines in Deep South. His writing not only offers an intimate and nuanced look at the terrain and architecture of the South but also provides poignant and often surprising insights into the cultural identity of its people. Throughout these journeys, Theroux's reflections are marked by both empathy and inquisitiveness. He presents a tapestry of modern Southern life, filled with its complexities and contradictions, illustrating how this region is an integral part of the American landscape, yet distinct in its own right. In Deep South, readers will find a masterful travelogue and a thoughtful cultural study, as Paul Theroux offers a rich, vibrant portrait of the Southern states—a living, breathing entity full of warmth, resilience, and a sense of profound history. This book is a powerful reminder of the enduring and captivating beauty of the South and its people.
