Lots of received wisdom is plain wrong. Sometimes, as with the old belief that all dinosaurs were scaly, it's because new knowledge has come to light (fossil finds suggest many had feathers), turning 'facts' into myths. Other 'wrong' facts, for example, that compasses point North, are half-truths: the full truth is much more interesting!
