Gaia's Garden by Toby Hemenway is an influential work that reshapes the way we perceive gardening and our interaction with the natural world. Building upon the principles of permaculture, Hemenway introduces a revolutionary approach that encourages collaboration with natural ecosystems rather than battling against them. This second edition of the seminal book delves into the philosophy of creating sustainable and self-renewing garden environments, making it relevant for urban, suburban, and rural settings alike.

Hemenway dispels the myth that ecological gardening is reserved for expansive, multi-acre properties by guiding readers on how to cultivate vibrant, multifunctional gardens in their own backyards. The author expertly explains how to assemble communities of plants—each serving complementary roles—to build a thriving backyard ecosystem. This approach not only enhances the aesthetic and productivity of your garden space but also helps in nurturing the local habitat.

Among the functions that these plant communities can perform are:

  • Enhancing soil fertility and preserving its structure, thus reducing the need for synthetic fertilisers.
  • Implementing water catchment techniques that conserve and utilise rainwater efficiently.
  • Creating a safe haven for beneficial insects, birds, and other wildlife, increasing biodiversity.
  • Developing a system of edible growth, where seasonal fruits, nuts, and vegetables flourish to create a natural food forest.

This revised edition introduces a pivotal new chapter on urban permaculture. Focused on those with restricted garden spaces in cities and suburbs, it provides creative solutions tailored for smaller environments. This makes the principles of permaculture accessible and achievable regardless of your location.

No matter the size of your garden, by applying the principles outlined in Gaia's Garden, you will find your space transformed into a more diverse, natural, and beautiful haven. Moreover, once established, an ecological garden, as Hemenway illustrates, significantly reduces maintenance efforts and eliminates the arduous tasks commonly associated with conventional gardening practices.

Through its insightful and practical guidance, Gaia's Garden continues to inspire and empower gardeners to embrace the art of working synergistically with nature, creating gardens that are both sustainable and abundant.

About the Author

Toby Hemenway is the author of the first major North American book on permaculture, Gaia's Garden: A Guide to Home-Scale Permaculture, and an adjunct assistant professor at Portland State University. He wrote the foreword for Heather C. Flores' Food Not Lawns. After obtaining a degree in biology from Tufts University, Toby worked for many years as a researcher in genetics and immunology, first in academic laboratories including Harvard and the University of Washington in Seattle, and then at Immunex, a major medical biotech company. At about the time he was growing dissatisfied with the direction biotechnology was taking, he discovered permaculture, a design approach based on ecological principles that creates sustainable landscapes, homes, and workplaces. A career change followed, and Toby and his wife spent ten years creating a rural permaculture site in southern Oregon. He was associate editor of Permaculture Activist, a journal of ecological design and sustainable culture, from 1999 to 2004. His current project is developing urban sustainability resources in Portland, Oregon, where he now lives. He teaches permaculture and consults and lectures on ecological design throughout the country. His writing has appeared in magazines such as Whole Earth Review, Natural Home, and Kitchen Gardener. He is available for workshops, lectures, and consulting in ecological design. Visit his web site at http:// www.patternliteracy.com
